Alumni Blog: Program Surpassed All My Expectations

Mladen Grgić | Fulbright Student Program Experience

A student siting in front a UniversityIn 2016, I was granted a Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship for a research visit to Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) at the University of California, Berkeley. My research is focused on Chinese foreign policy and its outward investments, and I chose the UC Berkeley as it is one of the most prestigious universities in the USA, and IEAS being one of the most important institutes worldwide working on Asian studies.

The year spent there became a breakthrough for my research career. I was impressed with all research infrastructure made available to me, and in particular with the international and professional environment at the Institute. The libraries, research databases, and other sources are really impressive. Further, I had an opportunity to collaborate with some of the leading scholars and researchers in the field.

The other part of the program, which included enrichment seminars and various cultural events was even more fascinating. It enabled me to get to know American society in its fullest, with all its splendours and problems, while the people I met gave me the inspiration to continue with my work. Indeed, some of the people I encountered, enriched me as a person. The whole program is so well planned and structured, that surpassed all my expectations. I will continue to cooperate with the people I met there, while I hope to stay in contact with all those amazing people I met through the program.
