On April 8, U.S. Ambassador to Montenegro Margaret A. Uyehara made opening remarks at an award ceremony celebrating the best investigative journalism stories published in 2014 on the social integration of Roma in Montenegro. The ceremony was organized by the Montenegrin Ministry of Culture and Ministry for Protection of Human and Minority Rights to honor International Roma Day and quality journalism which contributes to raising awareness of the issues facing the Romani people.

Ambassador Uyehara underscored that Roma continue to face discrimination – including suffering from a lack of access to education, higher rates of employment, and very limited access to healthcare, and reiterated that the U.S. Embassy is committed to advancing Roma rights.
