Special Advisor for International Disability Rights at the U.S. Department of State, Judith Heumann, is visiting Montenegro October 6-8, 2015. Ms. Heumann will meet with Minister of Human and Minority Rights Suad Numanovic, Head of the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee Halil Dukovic, Ombudsman Sucko Bakovic, as well as civil society and international organizations’ representatives to discuss issues related to the rights of persons with disabilities.
Special Advisor Heumann will also visit the public institution for accommodation of persons with special needs “Komanski Most” and attend a training session of the Wheelchair Basketball Club “Paramont.” Media interested in covering Ms. Heumann’s meeting with members of the “Paramont” team and interviewing her should be at the Secondary Vocational School “Sergije Stanic” in Podgorica at 17:15 on Wednesday, October 7.
Prior to Montenegro, on her tour of South Central Europe and Balkan States, Ms. Heumann visited Poland, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Albania. Following Montenegro she will travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The focus of her trip is on the U.S. experience with disability rights laws and the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (the ADA), as well as the implementation of disability rights laws, the international independent living movement, and the importance of governments and disabled persons’ organizations working together to advance the rights of persons with disabilities.
