U.S. Embassy statement on government formation

With a new Government of Montenegro taking office today, the United States continues to stand with the country and citizens of Montenegro in advancing EU accession and maintaining Euro-Atlantic values.

The new Montenegrin government should be accountable to its stated goals of “full membership of Montenegro in the European Union; active and credible membership in the NATO alliance; improving good neighborly relations; and strengthening the role of our country in multilateral organizations.”  As a fellow NATO Ally, we are concerned that factions which have not historically supported these stated objectives could impede Montenegro’s progress. We urge vigilance to ensure Montenegro can seize this historic opportunity to realize its full democratic and economic potential.

We hope to see the newly formed government quickly make progress on its commitments, advancing the country on EU accession and remaining a strong NATO Ally.  We will support and recognize constructive actions by the new Parliament and government, while voicing our concerns about activities that contradict Euro-Atlantic values and impede tangible progress toward EU integration.  Expectations are high, and we anticipate they can and will be met.
